A Conference and Exhibition on the Aesthetics of Arabic Calligraphy at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA)

Alexandria — The BA held an International Conference on the Aesthetics of Arabic Calligraphy organized by the BA Calligraphy Center during the period from 9-11 May 2006. Dr. Abdel Halim Nureldine, The conference was inaugurated by the Director of the BA Calligraphy Center and Mr. Mohamed Roteil, Head of Arabic Calligraphy Unit.

The opening session was started with an address by Mr. Roteil, who read a poem (which he wrote for the occasion) highlighting the importance of science in Islamic and Arab history, and referring to the development of Arabic calligraphy and its arts. Mr. Roteil emphasized the importance of the conference as a gathering of distinguished professionals in Arabic calligraphy to discuss the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy. Concluding his address, Mr. Roteil called upon teachers, parents, and mass media to search for talents in this deeply rooted artistic field, and to help develop such talents.

Dr. Abdel Halim Nureldine gave a speech referring to the importance of the conference in discussing creativity in Arabic calligraphy and emphasizing the aesthetic aspect of this art. He stressed on the role of the Calligraphy center in promoting this art through collaborating with cultural institutions and concerned civil societies to spread this art among schools and universities and to restore respect to Arabic calligraphy teachers.

The opening session was concluded by honoring Arabic calligraphy artists and researchers from different Arab and Islamic countries including Said Ibrahim, Mohamed Hosni, Mohamed Abdel Kader, Abdel Razek Salem, and others.
